Cellulite may just as well be this world's biggest problem. Somehow, having cellulite ridden legs suddenly diminishes one woman's view of herself. And it's no exaggeration. Many women suffer from ridicule and shame because they have cellulite on their abs, thighs or buttocks, and this causes them to have a very low self esteem.
To seemingly address this problem, many beauty product manufacturers release cream after cream, promising these women of a unique technology only their company has, the technology which can completely remove the cellulite of their nightmares. And then women would race to get their hands on these anti-cellulite creams, only to find out they don't work.
And then when you thought you have seen it all, more manufacturers come out with cellulite busting shorts designed to give your legs a more shapely look by eliminating the cottage cheese on them. And then some women resort to a potentially harmful liposuction procedure just to end it all. Too common a problem, too little knowledge on it. If you want to fight cellulite, here are some of the facts (and some of the fallacies) you need to know.
Fallacy: Only fat women have cellulite
Fact: Cellulite affects 90 percent of the female population
This is perhaps the most popular and most widely believed myth on cellulite. Well the truth is, it affects 90 percent of the female population worldwide. Men can also have cellulite. This means that the Hollywood celebrities you so admire on screen also have cottage cheese and orange peels on their lower bodies.
Cellulite is only more visible on more overweight women for two reasons. One, because cellulite serves as pockets for fat cells and when these fat cells enlarge, this results to the cottage cheese many abhor. Two, this is because in women, the fats are positioned in a 90 degree manner which makes the fats tug the skin downwards, making the fat cells more visible.
Fallacy: Cellulite creams and shorts remove cellulite.
Fact: They cannot go deeper into the skin.
If you want to reduce the appearance of your cellulite in an easy way, then go ahead and buy yourself bottles of anti-cellulite cream and perhaps a pair of anti-cellulite shorts. The cream treats the skin and makes it more elastic and supple, thus effectively masking the appearance of cellulite. Cellulite shorts also remove excess water from the area so fat cells are not as bloated.
However, using these products cannot remove cellulite. They only mask cellulite but they do not remove it because the cellulite is situated in the innermost layer of the skin or the subcutaneous layer. Cellulite creams can go deep but not as deep as the subcutaneous layer of the skin, much less the cellulite shorts.
Fallacy: Exercise, diet and fluids erase cellulite.
Fact: They only reduce the appearance of cellulite.
Virtually nothing can remove the cellulite inside our skin because first, they are situated really deep and second, they are much more stubborn than ordinary fat. Because of this, regular exercise, a healthy diet and a lot of fluids which are effective in burning ordinary fats may not necessarily be effective against cellulite.
What these three things can do however is to reduce the appearance of cellulite. They have the same effect as cellulite shorts and cream but their effect last longer. If you are still young or if you do not suffer from cellulite yet, doing these things right now will serve you well in the future; your thighs will certainly thank you.
Exercise, diet and fluid intake is recommended because they are a good step to changing to a healthy lifestyle. These are good preventive measures so that you will not need to suffer from low self esteem out of having cottage cheese lumps on your body.
Fallacy: Liposuction is an effective way to get rid of cellulite
Fact: Liposuction will not help, and is actually harmful.
Many women (and men) decide to go under the surgeon's knife to ultimately get rid of their cellulite problem. The surgical way to remove cellulite is through liposuction. However, liposuction can eliminate fats but it does not eliminate the cellulite which pockets the fats. It makes your cellulite less obvious though because of the removal of the fat.
In many cases, liposuction can actually worsen the situation. The patient's fats become more prominent so the tendency to have cottage cheese lumps is heightened. Aside from these trivial stuff, undergoing a liposuction procedure can cause so many harmful side effects such as dead skin, swelling, fluid imbalance, organ failure and worst, death.
